The City suffered no major crop damages during the spate of heavy rainfall last week, the City Agriculturist’s Office (CAO) reported Tuesday.

According to City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat, the only crop damage report the CAO has received was the lodging of approximately 1.5 hectares of rice in Manicahan. The total damage cost is estimated to be around Php 60,000.00.

Palacat added that the CAO is already working to provide affected farmers the necessary assistance, including the provision of rice seedlings.

Other than the reported incident in Manicahan, no other rain-related damage to crops and agricultural lands were reported.

While the resulting damages will affect and cause a decrease in rice production, its effects on the City’s rice supply will be minimal, said the City Agriculturist.

Lodging is defined as a reduction in plant canopy height due to bending of the shoot from a vertical position because of excess growth or beating by rain.

Last week, a series of heavy rains resulted in a surge of flood waters rendering several streets unpassable and causing the suspension of classes in the elementary and secondary levels due to the continuing rains. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
