Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde has highly commended the police and military authorities for the neutralization of a hardcore member of the Abu Sayyaf group and wanted for numerous crimes specifically kidnapping and illegal detention in an operation in barangay Talabaan Friday.

Basit Balahim was arrested by combined police and military forces in an operation in sitio Balinsungay and Gapuh in barangay Talabaan in the east coast past 1:30pm Friday, July 10. Balahim is the brother in law of ASG leader Puruji Indama and is said to be involved in the Golden Harvest kidnapping incident in Tairan, Lamitan Basilan in 2002. Prior to his arrest, the police and military authorities also conducted two operations in Tugbungan and Talon-talon purposely to serve a search warrant against Alkam Hadjail et al for violations of Republic Acts 10591 and 9561. The raid in Tugbungan was negative but the operation in Talon-talon  yielded a fragmentation grenade, blasting caps and some IED wirings.

Iturralde said the all out efforts of the law enforcement authorities are proofs that the security sector is unyielding in its commitment to safeguard lives and properties.  “Their hardening measures yield positive results and the city government is continuously grateful and supportive of all their efforts.”

During his stint as acting mayor, Iturralde was also in constant communication with City Police Director PSSupt. Angelito Casimiro and Task Force Zamboanga Chief Col. Andrelino Colina on all matters concerning peace and security.

Parallel with Mayor Beng Climaco’s priority thrust on security, Iturralde said the City Council fully supports, through  legislation, all programs and projects related to security for the safety and protection of the city and the residents.

Per report from PSSupt. Casimiro, Iturralde said the operations in Tugbungan and Talon-talon conducted 6am Friday aimed to simultaneously serve search warrants issued by the Court against Hadjail et al for violation of RA 10591 and RA 9561. In Tugbungan, the search was done at a boarding house owned by Hadji Yusop Esmi in Alavar Drive but the search yielded negative results.

On the other hand, the search warrant was served at Norbin Drive in Talon-talon also against Alkam Hadjail where he was said to be temporarily staying at the house of Lotti Kabukisan. Recovered from Kabukisan’s house were 1 MK2 fragmentation grenade, blasting caps and IED wirings. The search was done in coordination with the barangay  officials. — Sheila Covarrubias
