Mayor Beng sets heroes’ welcome for Diaz, Colonia PDF Print E-mail

The City Government will roll out the red carpet anew today, July 13, for two Zamboanguenos who harvested gold and bronze medals in the Wrestling Championships held as part of the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Thailand last June 26.

Mayor Beng Climaco will lead City Government officials in welcoming gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz and bronze medalist Nestor Colonia during the heroes’ welcome ceremony set at 8am today after the flag raising rite in front of City Hall.

Diaz won the title in the Women’s 53 kg category and broke the record in the snatch event with 98 kgs. and 115 kgs. in the clean and jerk with a total of 213 kgs. Colonia on the other hand got the bronze medal in the 59 kg men’s division.

Diaz and Colonia will also receive cash incentives from the City Government pursuant to Ordinance 231 in the amount of P150,000 and P75,000 respectively.

Last June 22, Mayor Climaco also spearheaded the heroes’ welcome ceremony for 7 Zamboanguenos who also reaped medals in the SEA Games held in Singapore. They included billiards player Chezka Centeno (gold medal in the 9-ball category), Eumir Feliz Marcial (gold medal) in the boxing event, softball players Sonny Boy Acuna, Orlando Binarao, Emerson Atilano and Vermon Diaz (gold medal) and Alshamier Ibnohasim,  bronze medalist for his performance in the Pencak silat event.

Centeno, Marcial (represented by his father Eulogio) and Ibnohasim were present during the ceremonies and received from Mayor Climaco symbolic checks representing the City Government’s incentive. The others failed to make it to the ceremony in City Hall due to conflict in schedule. — Sheila Covarrubias
