The City Government Team involved in the Early Recovery Coordination Structure on Wednesday briefed Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin on the progress of the implementation of the recovery and rehabilitation efforts for families affected by the 2013 siege.

Aside from the briefing at the Western Mindanao Command in Upper Calarian, Gazmin also visited the different sites where permanent houses including the drainage and road packages are being constructed.

City Caretaker and Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde led the different sector leads during discussions about the temporary shelters and the facilities  or amenities provided therein as well as the status of the permanent shelters being constructed on-site and off-site.

Assistant City Administrator Elmeir Apolinario discussed about the purchase of the MIndeva property in Rio Hondo and the closure of the Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex (JFEMSC) in Baliwasan while City Housing Division Chief Rodrigo Pagotaisidro delved on the status of the different housing packages implemented by the National Housing Authority.

Both Apolinario and Pagotaisidro, per instructions of Mayor Beng Climaco, requested Sec. Gazmin to h elp facilitate the release of the funds for the construction of the military base in Rio Hondo and the rehabilitation/reconstruction of the JFEMSC. Funding for the sewage facilities for houses on stilts is also needed the soonest possible time.

District II Congresswoman Lilia Nuño also helped provide inputs concerning the Z3R project including the status of the IDPs at the Taluksangay transitory site.

Public Works and Highways Regional Director Jorge Sebastian presented updates concerning the road packages and Social welfare Regional Director Zenaida Arevalo discussed about assistance and support to IDPs in transitory sites and permanent shelters.

Sec. Gazmin expressed satisfaction with the reports including what he saw on the ground during his visit to the area.

He vowed to  help facilitate the requests of the local government but urged officials concerned to submit their requests with the complete documentary requirements for faster approval.

“In submission of requests for funding, be very deliberate in coming up with documentary requirements to shorten the process,” the DND Secretary added.

Also present during the meeting with the Secretary were Councilor Rommel Agan, Wesmincom Chief LTGen. Rustico Guerrero and other officials from the city government and regional line agencies. — Sheila Covarrubias
