Everything is set for the earthquake drill in City Hall today, Thursday, June 30 which is simultaneous with the other areas in the country as part of the observance of National Disaster Preparedness month.

City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer (CDRRMO) head Elmeir Apolinario has urged all concerned offices to actively participate in the drill which his intended to drum up awareness on what to do in case of a magnitude 8 earthquake hits the city.

Organized jointly by the CDRRMO and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the earthquake drill will be concentrated on the main City Hall and the annex building which house about 9 city departments including the Office of the City Mayor.

The Zamboanga City Police Office will also join the drill to determine preparedness in times of earthquakes.

A 60-minute blaring of the City Hall siren will signal the start of the drill during which the participating offices will then execute their respective earthquake response drills. Observers from the Office of Civil Defense will be deployed to the scene to monitor the response of the drill participants.

An incident camp command post with Apolinario as incident commander will be set up at the Plaza Gen. Vicente Alvarez be set up where all incident planning and tactical operations will be directed.

The earthquake drill is also one of the activities that the CDRRMO has lined up in line with the observance of National Disaster Preparedness Month which kicked off July 10 with a bloodletting activity.  An information campaign on disaster preparedness is also being conducted across different sectors to better prepare the residents on both natural and human-induced calamities. — Sheila Covarrubias
