Food Security on Agriculture and Modernization Secretary Kiko Pangilinan is expected to arrive in Zamboanga City today  to conduct personal assessment on the rice stability and compliance of the National Food Authority (NFA) as well as other government line agencies tasked on food security.

Pangilinan will be joined by NFA Administrator Renan Dalisay in the conduct of a multi-sectoral conference as well as meet the top NFA officials here in the region led by Regional Director Camilo Magtrayo pertaining to issues confronting the rice industry.

After the dialogue with different sectors, Pangilinan will also inspect the local port facilities as well as the NFA rice storage facility in San Roque to ensure enough supply of rice in the region in preparation for any natural or man-made disasters,

In his visit to Isabela City, Basilan on July 24 to assess the coconut scale insect devastation in the province, Pangilinan told local newsmen that he will be coming back to Zamboanga City to look into the plight of farmers here, especially their complaints on the “supply and demand”, reported overpricing, mixing of commercial rice with NFA rice, hoarding as well as rampant rice smuggling in the entire region.

Meanwhile, NFA administrator Dalisay is expected to inform and announce to NFA officials in the region new policies and directives to ensure safety of rice production and strict measures in monitoring of alleged importation of “plastic rice” from the southern backdoor.

Dalisay will also consult local farmers on the policies and procedures of NFA in rice production and disposition, as well as in coordinating with the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Agrarian Reform to strengthen their food security procedures in region 9. – Bhong Simbajon/RMN News
