Population Census 2015 will kick off today, August 10, with Mayor Beng Climaco as the first client of the door-to-door collection of census data in Zamboanga City.

Some 527 enumerators of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) formerly the National Statistics Office, will be deployed to the city’s 98 barangays to cover the 785 enumerator areas.

The results of the 2015 POPCEN is expected to come out by the end of the year, pending approval of the President.

As this developed, PSA Regional Director Ronaldo Taghap has appealed for public cooperation and support to the census data gathering activity intended to make an inventory of the population of the entire country.

The population census is significant as it aims to provide government executives, policy and decision makers, and planners with population data, especially updated population counts of all 42,029 barangays in 1,634 cities in the country.

Taghap expects the city’s population to reach the 900,000 mark for the 2015 Popcen given the city’s high population growth rate. In the 2010 Popcen, the city’s population was registered at 807,000.

The POPCEN 2015 will be the 14th census to be undertaken in the country since the first census in 1903. It will also be the 3rd population census to be conducted in between two decennial censuses. — Sheila Covarrubias
