Engineer kidnapped in Basilan rescued PDF Print E-mail

An engineer seized by suspected Abu Sayyaf gunmen in Basilan 16 days ago was rescued yesterday morning.
Engr. Virgilio Fernandez has been rescued from his kidnappers, according to Chief Superintendent Bienvenido Latag, police regional director of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

Col. Alexander Macario, commander of the Special Operations Task Force, told neewsmen that the rescue of Fernandez in Barangay Magkawa, Albarka town, was pulled off without a shot being fired.

“Our brave soldiers snatched him (Fernandez) from his captors last night and they escaped together towards the rendezvous point with my command post, reaching it at 9 a.m. Sunday, Macario said.

Fernandez, he said, looked pale but was “in high spirits.”
Basilan Bishop Martin Jumoad confirmed Fernandez’s rescue.
Fernandez is a project engineer of MACE construction company.

He was snatched by four gunmen in Sitio Libi, Barangay Bulanting in Lamitan City while he was traveling with his driver around 3: 30 p.m. on June 3.
The kidnappers at gunpoint seized him and fled toward the direction of Barangay Caddayan in the township of Akbar, Basilan.
