Mayor Beng Climaco has urged residents of Zamboanga to fully support and participate in the census data gathering activity or the so-called Population Census 2015 of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

This, as the PSA kicked off Monday, August 10, the nationwide population survey in Zamboanga City with Mayor Climaco as the first interviewee.

“We need the help of the media to let the residents know that the population census is a very important activity that should be supported and participated by every resident,” the mayor emphasized as she thanked the PSA through Dir. Ronaldo Taghap for facilitating the census gathering activity at her residence in Sta. Maria early Monday morning.

She said PSA enumerators, who have undergone appropriate trainings, will be conducting door-to-door surveys and will be wearing proper identification cards. “I call on the public to support and participate in the data gathering activity given the significance of the program”.

The PSA is deploying a total of 527 enumerators will cover the 785 enumeration areas spread out in the city’s 98 barangays.

The POPCEN 2015, a complete enumeration of households in the country, is designed primarily to take inventory of the population of the entire Philippines. Its objective is to provide government executives, policy and decision makers, and planners with population data, especially updated population counts of all 42,029 barangays in 1,634 cities in the country.

In last POPCEN in 2010, the City’s population registered at 807,000. Given the City’s high population growth rate, the PSA expects the City will reach the 900,000 mark for the 2015 POPCEN. — Sheila Covarrubias
