Mayor Beng Climaco formally turned over the city government’s cash incentives to the Zamboangueño athletes who bagged medals in the 28th South East Asian (SEA) Games held in Singapore last June.

Accompanied by City Sports Development Officer Cecilia Atilano, Climaco extended the cash incentives to athletes Chesca Centeno (Gold Medalist, Billiard), Eumir Felix Marcial (Gold Medalist, Boxing), Clemente Tabugara (Bronze Medalist, Wushu), Alshameer Ibnohasim (Bronze Medalist, Pencak Silat), and Emerson Atilano, Rolando Binarao, Sonny Boy Acuna, and Vermond Diaz (Gold Medalists, Softball).

The provision of cash incentives to winning athletes is mandated under City Ordinance 231, an ordinance providing financial incentives to athletes, players, coaches, and trainers who achieve high honors in international sporting events and competitions.

Under the ordinance, a gold medal win is equivalent to a cash incentive of P150,000; a silver medal is P100,000 and a bronze win is P75,000. Of the total incentive, 30% will go to the athletes’ coaches.

For group events, the incentive will be divided among the number of participating players.

Zamboangueño SEA Games medalists Hidilyn Diaz (Gold Medalist, Weightlifting) and Nestor Colonia (Bronze Medalist, Weightlifting) will be receiving their cash incentives on a later date.— Jasmine Mohammadsali
