Some 100 houses made of half concrete and light materials were razed in a fire that broke out at the coastal community of Laminusa Village, Logoy Grande, Barangay Talon-Talon this city Monday morning.

District Fire Marshall Supt. Dominador Zabala,Jr said that almost all the district’s fire trucks and that of other sub-stations responded to the fire shortly before  8 a.m. yesterday.

The blaze destroyed almost all the houses in the said village with mixed population of Muslims and Christians. Only a few were left standing, particularly those located near the road where there was some five meter open space which kept the flames from spreading accross the other side of the village.

Responding firemen had a hard time battling the flames because of the narrow roads leading to the fire scene in the interior part that was difficult to penetrate.

Another problem was the scarcity of water and fire hydrants in the area which prompted the firefighters seek assistance from the Zamboanga City Water District for water supply.

Supt. Zabala said the fire rapidly spread to several houses because of the wind which circled in both directions.

The affected residents scampered when the flames spread, mostly carrying  their belongings and proceeded to the mangrove areas situated next to their village for safety.

Zabala said they are still conducting a investigation as to the origin of the fire and how it started.

Talon-Talon Barangay Chairman Teodyver Arquiza told RMN Zamboanga they immediately conducted an onsite registration of the affected families as well as gathered the representatives of each affected family for proper tagging and accounting as well as the giving of necessary relief assistance.

Arquiza said the fire victims will be temporarily placed in a designated area inside Talon-Talon Elementary School campus while the barangay council and the city government of Zamboanga are still working on temporary shelters and possible relocations. – Bhong Simbajon/RMN News
