Mayor Beng Climaco said during a radio interview yesterday morning that time is ripe to rescind the long overdue contract between the Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative (Zamcelco) and the San Ramon Power, Inc. (SRPI).

She said it’s been a long time since Zamcelco and SRPI entered into a power sale agreement but nothing definite has come out yet, and worst SRPI has not even started constructing its coal-fired power plant in San Ramon.

What is worse, the chief executive lamented, Zamcelco is not telling the truth about the contract. “El problema hende ta dale el verdad.”

She said Zamcelco is not ready to rehabilitate its capacity, the management and technical capability, and more particularly the cooperative’s system’s loss.

Mayor Climaco told Radyo Agong that she had requested the City Legal Office to study the issue on rescinding the Zamcelco-SRPI contract and how the city government can help the power coop rehabilitate.

She said Zamcelco should not be tied up to only one power supplier like the SRPI. It must be open to and free for other power producers.

The mayor was likewise calling on Zamcelco to be transparent in its operation so that the member-consumers or the general public can be clarified. — Vic Larato
