Mayor Beng Climaco said yesterday there is no need as of this time yet for the 9th Regional Public Safety Battalion (RPSB-9) to return to Barangay Labuan in the west coast of this city.

“We have seen in the past, there was an abduction incident in Labuan despite the presence of RPSB-9 in the area,” Climaco said. “Siguro por este tiempo no ma lang anay canila debolbe alya,” she added in Chavacano.

Climaco noted particularly the good partnership between the Marines company leader Maj. Sanson and the Labuan Police Station 10 chief together with the Marines and the police in the coastal village.

“The people seem to have that level of confidence on the Marines and Labuan police. So, wherever the deployment is, as long as the people feel safe and secured, let us continue with that action,” the chief executive said, adding that she leaves it up to regional police director Chief Supt. Miguel Antonio where to deploy the RPSB-9.

To recall, elements of the RPSB-9 were immediately pulled out of Labuan after they figured in a shootout with the Marines from the Marine Battalion Landing Team (MBLT-9) Tuesday night, killing two police officers and one soldier, and wounding a civilian.

Elements of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) were deployed in Labuan in place of the RPSB-9.

As this developed, Climaco justified the continued presence of the Marines (MBLT-9) in Zamboanga City despite the bloody incident in Labuan.

“I would like people to know bien grande ayuda ta dale canatun el fuerza del MBLT-9. They (marines) do not only provide safety and security, but they are deployed even to far-flung barangays,” the mayor said.

She cautioned some people that are opposed to the Marines’ continued presence in the city to re-evaluate and reconsider their position.

“Let us not be reactive just because of the Labuan incident,” she said and urged people to wait for the investigation “to find out kien ba gayod el culpable.”

“But, si mira kita el presencia del MBLT-9 is a big help to the city in terms of augmenting the security measures of the local police,” the mayor averred.— Vic Larato
