The Integrated Philippine Association of Optometrists (IPAO) – Zamboanga Peninsula Chapter has requested the assistance of the City Government for the enforcement of appropriate laws to ensure the safe practice of optometry in the City.

In a courtesy call to Mayor Beng Climaco Thursday afternoon, July 3, the IPAO cited the need for the strengthened enforcement of Republic Act 8050, an act regulating the practice of optometry, upgrading optometric education, integrating optometrists, and for other purposes, in light of reports of unauthorized optometry practices in barangays and provinces.

“We are requesting [the local government unit] not to issue permits for persons or company for any “Free Eye Check-up/Refraction” without showing any proof of his or her Optometrist Professional License issued by the PRC,” said  IPAO – Zamboanga Peninsula Chapter Secretary Agnes Faye Mecaydor, OD.

The IPAO also turned over to Mayor Climaco a list of the names of all licensed optometrist practicing in the Zamboanga Peninsula Region.

According to IPAO, the unauthorized practice of optometry is rampant not only in the City and surrounding barangays but in surrounding provinces as well.

As part of their advocacy against unauthorized practice and to safeguard the eye health of Zamboangueños, the IPAO enjoined residents to consult and obtain proper eye examination from licensed optometrists only. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
