Mayor Beng Climaco Sunday morning mobilized government resources to respond and assist victims of a vehicular accident along the Mercedes Highway junction Pasobolong involving a rural transit bus from Pagadian City enroute to Guiwan terminal.

The incident killed two persons- Amelia Bucoy, and Raquel Solis y Romina of Lanao and wounded 17 others including Solis’ son.

Mayor Climaco rushed to the scene, upon learning about the incident to help facilitate response efforts. She later proceeded to the hospitals where the wounded were sent for treatment as well as paid her last respects to the two dead victims at the funeral parlors.

Police reports reveal that Rural Transit Bus with plate number JVH-919 and body number 9560 driven by Rogemio Bambao y Solon, 50 years old of Navalan, Tukuran, Zamboanga del Sur, was enroute to Guiwan terminal when it ran off the highway and bumped a single motorcycle driven by Bucoy. After bumping the motorcycle, the bus smashed two houses owned by the Colonia family and later fell into a ravine.

Bucoy and Solis were killed on the spot but Solis was trapped and dragged underneath the bus and was extricated by the response team from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management office with the use of the newly-acquired extrication equipment.

Human error is said to be the cause of the incident.

As this developed, on orders of Mayor Climaco,  CDRRMO head and concurrent OIC City Administrator Elmeir Apolinario, Ph.D. coordinated with the Rural Transit Bus management concerning the latter’s obligations to the victims and the damaged properties.

The issue was amicably settled, according to Apolinario, and the bus management has agreed to shoulder all expenses for the treatment of the wounded victims, the burial of the dead including payment for the damaged houses and properties. — Sheila Covarrubias
