Mayor Beng Climaco appeared optimistic this week that the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) will conduct its annual examinations for police officers in Zamboanga City starting next year.

Climaco made the announcement after she discussed the matter with outgoing Interior Secretary Mar Roxas and Atty. De Lima, stressing that the latter had already assured her that starting next year the NAPOLCOM exams will be administered in Zamboanga instead of Pagadian City.

“Uno tamen pidimiento di mio tan cuento con Atty. De Lima para dale NAPOLCOM exam akin a ciudad para el de atun mga pulis no necesita mas anda na Pagadian akin a lang na ciudad… and they gave me the assurance that by next year the NAPOLCOM exam will be conducted in the city,” Climaco announced during Sec. Roxas’s visit to the city last week.

The NAPOLCOM administers and controls the Philippine National Police (PNP) as mandated by the Constitution and the major police reform laws, Republic Act Nos. 6975 and 8551.

Under RA 8551 (PNP Reform and Reorganization Act of 1998), the Commission regained the powers to investigate police anomalies and irregularities and to administer police entrance examination and is granted summary dismissal powers over erring policemen.

In another development, Climaco expressed her gratitude to Sec. Roxas, saying that it was only during the latter’s time as DILG secretary that Zamboanga City has had a city police director from the city in the person of Sr. Supt. Angelito Casimiro.

She likewise reiterated her support for Supt. Casimiro in whatever endeavors he wanted for his police career even to become PNP chief in the future.—Vic Larato
