Mayor Beng Climaco on Friday, Sept. 11 convened the Zamboanga Hermosa 2015 steering committee to discuss preparations for the two-week festivities starting October 1 in honor of Nuestra Senora La Virgen del Pilar.

The meeting Friday was part of the series of preparations that the City Government is undertaking to ensure a peaceful and orderly celebration and conduct of activities.

Climaco said the security and public safety as well as cleanliness remains to be the primordial concern during the celebration that will culminate on October 12, the feast day of the La Virgen del Pilar. “Security and public safety as always remain our priority.”

Zamboanga Hermosa Festival is the city’s grandest celebration every year. The program of activities has been released with new activities added to the list such as the Smoke Out Grilled Food Fiesta at the R.T. Lim Boulevard from Oct. 2-9; Original Chavacano Video Music Festival on Oct. 8 at Centro Latino at 7pm and the Parade of Lights (Float competition) from R.T. Lim Boulevard to Paseo del Mar at 6pm on Oct. 9.

Mayor Climaco has issued Executive Order No. BC 134-2015 organizing the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival Committee that will work on the preparation, planning and budgeting to stage a festive, colorful and unforgettable fiesta celebration for locals as well as domestic and foreign visitors.

City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer and concurrent officer-in charge of the City Administrator’s Office Dr. Elmeir Apolinario is designated chairperson with Executive Assistant II Christian Olasiman sits as co-chairperson.

In addition to honoring the city’s patron saint, the mayor stated in her executive order that the Hermosa Festival will also endeavor to increase people’s awareness and interest in the rich history and cultural heritage of the city as well as its potentials for the promotion of the local tourism industry.

This year’s celebration is themed “Junto y Unido: Celebracion de Harmonia y Buen Amistad.” — Sheila Covarrubias
