The municipality of Dumingag in Zamboanga del Sur will host the “Asian Organic Rice Conference” on December 1 to 7, 2015.

Mayor Nancianceno Mejos Pacaliuca Jr. disclosed recently that the event is sponsored by the International Farmers Agriculture Organic Organization of Australia.

Agriculturists and farmers from the United States,  Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, South Korea Malaysia and China are expected to join the conference.

Pacaliuca said the organic rice conference is aimed to promote to the world the good effects of organic farming.

“I am very happy because they chose my municipality to host the organic rice conference. It will give benefits here to the farmers. They also chose Dumingag because rice experts witnessed our system on organic rice farming and other agricultural products, ” the mayor said.

Pacaliuca continued, “ In fact we have an ordinance for organic farming. The farmers here in Dumingag are only allowed to plant rice only twice a year. We will not allow three times farming and harvest every year for three times  because we want to make sure that the farm land will take a rest  for one season so that all harmful  chemicals will not destroy the land and most all it will kill the pests that are hazard to the growth of the rice. Most people here in Dumingag are farmers including private persons, businessmen,  government employees and local officials,” Pacaliuca revealed.

According to mayor, too much use of fertilizers and pesticides will destroy the fertility of the farm land.

“The farm land needs a rest,” he stressed.

He also said that the municipality has also organic farming for all vegetables.

“Our other agricultural products are corn, coconut copra, livestocks and rootcrops,” Pacaliuca said. — Allen Abastillas
