Nanning, China — Underscretary Ponciano Manalo of the Department of Trade and Industry, overall head of the Philippine delegation to the 12th China-ASEAN Exposition in Nanning, China has cited Zamboanga City as a “very important part of the business community in the Philippines” given its diverse potentials.

This is part of the reason why Zamboanga City is being featured as the country’s “City of Charm” in the ongoing 12th China-ASEAN Expo being held here in Nanning, China from Sept. 18-21, according to Manalo.

“Zamboanga is one city in the southern part of Mindanao that we would like to promote. We would like to show to the whole world and Asia that Zamboanga is open for business,” the DTI official said as he commended Mayor Beng Climaco and the City Government of Zamboanga for all the efforts in rebuilding the city amidst the challenges.

He lauded as well the Climaco-led delegation to China, who are mostly businessmen from Zamboanga for their efforts in promoting the city’s trade, tourism and investment potentials during the CAEXPO through the exhibit and in the various promotional conferences held that included business matching activities. “Congratulations to the delegation, the delegation is so solid and one in their aspiration to promote Zamboanga to the whole world and Asia.”

As the designated City of Charm, Zamboanga City is the center of promotional activities at the Philippine pavilion, at the commodity trade pavilion and in the different China-ASEAN promotional investment conferences.

Other than business exchanges, Zamboanga City also entered into a letter of intent with Guigang City, Guangzhou, China for the establishment of a sisterhood agreement intended to establishment friendship ties through sharing of experiences and best practices in areas of mutual interest.

Manalo stressed that the formal signing of the LOI is one platform that will promote and accelerate exchanges between Zamboanga and China that spur progress and development.

The Zamboanga Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Los Contratistas de Zamboanga, Zamboanga Economic Zone and Freeport Authority led by Chairman Christopher Arnuco and local exhibitors such as Sotto delicacies, EJT Food products, Universal Canning Corporation and Mega sardines are one with the city government in promoting Zamboanga.

CAEXPO held every year here in Nanning China stands out from other trade fairs and bears the missions of consolidating the friendly relationships between China and ASEAN, accelerating the CAFTA (China Asean Free Trade Agreement) construction and promoting cooperation between both sides in various fields.

Over the past 12 years, CAEXPOs have brought together high quality resources of China and ASEAN countries, formed multi-level, wide-ranging and cross regional exchanges and cooperation mechanisms and provided the most convenient platform for comprehensive cooperation between China and ASEAN, so that the bilateral cooperation has stepped from consensus to practice. — Sheila Covarrubias
