The City Government of Zamboanga will tender today at the frontage of City Hall a hero’s welcome to  the medalists in the Asian Weightlifting Championship held in Thailand recently.

Zamboangueña lifter Hidilyn Diaz outsmarted other participants from among the 33 Asian countries during the 26th Senior Women’s Asian Weightlifting championships from September 3 to 12, 2015, at Phuket, Thailand.

Diaz garnered a total of three gold medals in the snatch 96 kg., clean and jerk 118 kg. and total 121 kg. while Nestor Colonia led the 45th Senior Men’s Asian Weightlifting championship by reaping the two gold medals in clean and jerk 153 kg. and total 174 kg. and a silver in the snatch 121 kg. categories, respectively.

Heading the delegation to Thailand was Elbert “Bong” Atilano as team manager and head coach while Alfonsito Aldanete was the team’s coach.

Atilano said Diaz now ranks No. 1 among the Asian countries while Colonia ranks No. 25 in Asia.

“They are now in rigid training in preparation for the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) which will be held in Texas, Houston, from November 20 to 28, this year,” Atilano said.

Meanwhile, the Zamboanga delegation ranks second place in the overall medal standing at the Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission (POC-PSC) Philippine National Mindanao finals ‘15 held in Dao, Pagadian city from September 8-14, this year.  — Monch L. Follosco
