Mayor Beng Climaco commended yesterday the city’s athletic delegation to the Philippine National Games for ranking 2nd place in the overall medal tally of 35 gold, 26 silver and 22 bronze during the Mindanao Leg competition in Danao, Pagadian from Sept. 8-14.

The city’s medal harvest came from archery- 14, badminton- 8, boxing- 4, chess- 2, karatedo- 25, futsall- 2, swimming- 44, taekwondo- 7, Philspada- 26, and wrestling- 18.

The chief executive also highly praised Hidilyn F. Diaz for the three gold medals she reaped from the 26th Senior Women’s and 45th Senior Men’s Asian Weightlifting Championships conducted from Sept. 3-12 in Phuket, Thailand.

Diaz captured the gold medals from the lift series: 96 kg, 118 kg, and 214 kg.

Climaco likewise extolled Nestor L. Colonia, who snatched the gold medals from the 153 kg and 174 kg lifts plus the silver medal of the 121 kg toss.

Joining the duo in Thailand were their manager cum-head coach Elbert Atilano and coach Alfonso P. Aldanete.

Meanwhile, Diaz now ranks No. 1 in Asia from among 33 contries that participated in the Thailand championships, giving the first medal in the history of the Philippine Weightlifting Association and Philippine Sports Commission in 25 years of existence.

She and Colonia are preparing for their next competition, the 2015 IWF World Championships on Nov. 20-25 in Houston, Texas. It will be a qualifying event for the Rio Olympics 2016.— Vic Larato
