MATALAM, North Cotabato — Nine passengers of a passenger van died before Saturday dawn following a highway mishap in Barangay West Patadon here.

Chief Inspector Elias Colonia, Matalam police chief, said eight of the passengers died-on-the spot.

Initially, three of the victims who instantaneously died were identified as Nor Canda, 28, of Kabacan town; Lyle Octaviano, 28, of Aleosan; and Juliet Debalusan, 40, of Davao City.

Another victim, identified as Hydee Gubaton, of Pigcawayan town, later expired while undergoing treatment at the Cotabato Provincial Hospital in Kidapawan City.

“We are having difficulty in identifying most of the victims because they have no identification documents with them,” Colonia said.

Two of three passengers who survived the incident were identified as Abel Debulusan 33, from Davao City and Solida Acevuque Echevarria, 55, a resident of Aleosan, North Cotabato.

The driver, identified as Brendo Singco, a resident of Pikit town, escaped following the incident.

Passenger van conductor Jebon Carpio Policarpio voluntarily surrendered to the police.

During investigation, Policarpio said their van left Davao City 12 midnight of Friday enroute to Cotabato City when they figured in an accident along the Matalam highway.

Local traffic authorities are still establishing the cause of the mishap.

A police manhunt has also been launched against the missing driver.
