Thirteen original Chavacano love songs took center stage as the Hermosa Festival this time turned its spotlight on Zamboangueño musicians for the Original Chavacano Video Music Festival at Centro Latino Wednesday, October 7.

Open to all music composers and enthusiasts, the annual music competition this year introduced new elements in the form of three competition categories – Song Composition, Music Video, and Performance Competition.

All competing entries were love songs and written in Zamboanga Chavacano.

Highlighting the music festival was the Performance Competition held at Centro Latino Wednesday evening, featuring live performances of the performers and interpreters of the competing song entries. Performances were judged based on tonal quality, mastery, rhythm, musicality, and interpretation.

The grand winner received P 5,000 and a plaque, while second and third place winners received plaques and P 3,000 and P 2,000, respectively.

Under the Song Competition category, compositions were judged according to lyrics (content, unity of idea and meaning, language, choice of words) and music (melody, accompaniment, appropriateness of chords in relation to melody). The grand winner for the Song Competition category received P10,000, while second and third place winners received P7,000 and P5,000, respectively.

For the Music Video category, a 6-minute video accompanied the competition compositions as a visual story accompaniment using cinematography or animation. Video entries were judged according to content (concept, interpretation of music and direction, coherence, aesthetic, conceptual innovation and creative storytelling), technical quality (editing, sound, musical score, cinematic/animation techniques), and public support in the form of online votes for the videos which were posted through the Hermosa Festival 2015 official Facebook page.

The first place winner received P 5,000, while runners up received P 3,000 and P 2,000.

A special award, the Public Choice award, was also given to the music video with the highest number of online likes.

Held annually since 1984, the Chavacano Music Festival is one of principal events of the Zamboanga Hermosa celebrations and seeks to preserve Chavacano and encourage the proliferation of Chavacano music in local and national airwaves.

For over 30 years, the festival has successfully created hundreds songs in the Chavacano language. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
