Aimed to revive the typical but complete and healthy Filipino home called bahay kubo (nipa hut) in the barangays, the City Agriculturist Office has launched the “Bahay Kubo” project through its Sustainable Household Enterprise (SHE) initiative.

Mayor Beng Climaco together with City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat and San Roque barangay officials Wednesday spearheaded the launching of the program in San Roque, the third project to be launched in a week’s time. Tomorrow the Vitali bahay kubo project will also be unveiled.

Mayor Climaco commended the efforts of the City Agriculturist Office for continuously initiating steps to help encourage planting and eating vegetables especially among children. “We must always encourage the parents especially the mothers to be creative in the preparation of vegetables for their children.”

Palacat said the project forms part of Mayor Climaco’s SHE initiative and stands for Sustainable Household Enterprise which advocates farmers to optimize their land and be sufficient in providing for their families’ daily table needs and sell the excess produce for extra income.

He noted that the bahay kubo concept as depicted in a song of the same title is no longer existent. “Ya olvida ya quita con el cancion “Bahay Kubo”, debe revivi quita con el cancion, siembra gulay na di aton areredor.”

The project, Palacat said is worthwhile for residents not only because it helps promote a healthy lifestyle but also help earn extra income. He said City Agriculturist personnel will be willing to teach the technology so the project can be propagated and spread in all 98 barangays in the city.

The launching program was capped with the distribution of rice to the members of the farming association in the area through the generosity of donors from Taiwan. — Sheila Covarrubias
