A parade of illuminated floats lit up the city streets yesterday, October 9, in time for the Parade of Lights competition, one of the highlights of the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival 2015.

The competition, opened to any person, group, organization, institution, or company, showcased 14 floats designed after Zamboanga’s iconic landmarks, symbols, products, stories, and legends. All entries, accompanied by dancers and props, made its way from RT Lim Boulevard to Paseo del Mar where the lighted floats were put on display for public viewing.

The competition drew entries from different groups and organizations, including Permex Producer and Exporter Corporation, Zamboanga City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Unique Motors, Globe Telecom, 2GO, Agri Farmers Association, Sunny Land Garden, Mega Global Corporation, barangay San Roque, Piaggio/Ape, Southwest Asian Canning Corporation, SOPHIL, San Jose Gusu Youth Organization, and Cignal.

All competing floats were judged on the following criteria: symbolism (20%), which pertains to the success of the entries to project the beauty of Zamboanga’s landmarks and symbols; design (40%), which pertains to the concept and artistic merits of the design taking into consideration to balance, proportion, emphasis, repetition, harmony, rhythm as well as shapes and colors, and; execution and luminance (40%), which pertains to how the designs were realized, how the floats were made, and the use of lights.

The grand winner of the light parade competition received P 75,000 while runners up received P 50,000, P 30,000, P 20,000, and P 10,000, respectively. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
