In recognition of their contribution to the promotion of rabies awareness and responsible pet ownership, the city government through the Office of the City Veterinarian (OCVet) has cited three barangays for their pet friendliness.

In a short ceremony following the Pet Parade and Blessing held last Sunday, October 4, at the Jardin Maria Clara in Pasonanca, barangays Tetuan, Baliwasan and Canelar were feted for their commitment in implementing the city’s rabies and city pound ordinances.

Mayor Beng Climaco, herself a proud owner of three dogs, led fellow pet owners during the parade and mass blessing of domesticated animals in a simple celebration in honor of St. Francis of Assisi.

The quest for Zamboanga’s most pet friendly barangays officially started in March during the celebration of the Rabies Awareness Month in the city and culminated on September 28 or World Rabies Day, a global movement to raise awareness on rabies and rabies-related illnesses.

The city government under the Climaco administration remains committed to advancing the welfare of animals in the city.

In addition to giving free veterinary consultations during Dia de Alcalde, a service caravan bringing frontline city services to residents, the Office of the City Veterinarian also offers free vaccination as well as spay and neuter services every last Wednesday of the month on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The OCVet will also spearhead a simple ceremony on October 19 in City Hall to formally launch the observance of Meat Safety Consciousness Week. Slaughterhouse operators, public market stall holders and owners of lechon houses. — Claudine Uniana
