As in the previous years, the sail boat race dubbed as Regatta de Zamboanga on R.T. Lim Boulevard Sunday morning was a huge success with thousands of people from all walks of life witnessing the competition amid the scorching sun.

Mayor Beng Climaco said the Regatta is one of the main crowd-drawing events during Zamboanga Hermosa Festival in celebration of the feast of Nuestra Senora La Virgen del Pilar. She said it is one event which residents and even domestic and foreign tourists eagerly anticipate during Fiesta Pilar.

At least 180 vintas adorned with colorful sails joined the race in 15 hits and the winners of the 15 hits competed for the championship round with a top cash prize of P20,000— P10,000 of which from the City Government and another P10,000 from the Globe Telecommunications Company.

The winner also received a standard cignal TV kit. Second prize was P7,000, third prize was P5,000, fourth prize was P3,000 and fifth prize was P2,000 and a special prize of most colorful vinta sail. All winners also received a plaque of appreciation and the non-winners received a consolation prize of P1,000 each.

The crowd was sent to thrill and burst to cheers when the 15 winners of every hit struggled to advance and tried to overtake each other during the final round. In the end, a fisherman from Sinunuc, Amil Hamja, emerged as overall winner of the contest. Hamja was also the winner in the city-sponsored Regatta the past two years.

Also present were members of the City Council, Regional Police Director PCSupt. Miguel Antonio, City Police Director PSSupt. Angelito Casimiro, representatives from other law enforcement agencies and other national government agencies and NGOs. — Sheila Covarrubias
