The mayor of Tungawan town, Zamboanga Sibugay was killed in an ambush Monday in a remote barangay.

Police said Mayor Randy Climaco was aboard his vehicle came under fire near Barangay Batungan around 4 p.m.in Tungawan.

Climaco was heading to the town’s center when gunmen ambushed him, according to an initial police report, adding, several people who were with the mayor were also wounded in the daring attack.

“Honorable Randy Adlawan Climaco, municipal mayor of Tungawan, while on transit from Barangay Batungan to Poblacion Tungawan, was ambushed by undetermined number of armed men. Accordingly, the local chief executive was killed in the ambush and others wounded,” police said in the report.

The report  said that armed men positioned on both sides of the road on a rubber plantation rained their Toyota Hi Lux pickup truck with bullets.a

Aboard the pickup truck driven by Bimbot Bregundo with Climaco were his vice mayor Abduraup Abison who was wounded in the attack.

Another vehicle tailing Climaco was occupied by Alvin Gregorio who is running for Municipal Board seat. They all came from the local election office to file their certificates of candidacy.

Army Special Forces soldiers were dispatched to the area to help the local police force hunt down the ambushers. No individual or group claimed responsibility for the ambush, but police suspect the attack was politically motivated.

The killing of Climaco occurred at the first day of the filing of the certificate of candidacy for the 2016 polls.

On November 14, 2013, Arsenio Climaco, former mayor of Tungawan, was  killed while his wife and granddaughter were critically wounded in an ambush in Zamboanga City.

Arsenio Climaco, his wife Helen, and their three-year-old granddaughter Shirly Mar Climaco Akibol, along with two other minors, were cruising the Lobregat Highway in aboard an SUV when motorcycle-riding men opened fire at them.

Police said the gunmen could have tailed Climaco’s vehicle and pulled off the attack when the former mayor slowed down in an intersection. — Dan Toribio Jr. with Mindanao Examiner report
