Archbishop Romulo Dela Cruz on Monday appealed to the candidates, both for national and local posts, to ensure a clean and honest 2016 elections.

Dela Cruz issued the statement as the candidates start filing on Monday their Certificates of Candidacy (COC) with the Commission on Elections for next year’s elections.

The Comelec has set the schedule for the filing of COC from Monday, October 12, until Friday, October 16.

“I hope and pray that our candidates here in Zamboanga (City) will not use dirty tactics to destroy one another but will recognize the good (things) a particular candidate has done,” Dela Cruz said, adding, “I’m calling on all the candidates, please try to make this coming election 2016 clean and honest.”

Dela Cruz said there is no need for candidates to resort to mudslinging since the electorates are intelligent voters.

“They (people) know how to pick and choose their candidates,” Dela Cruz added.

He asked the candidates, to include the political parties, to unite “as the election can also be a source of unity.”

He also called on the candidates not to use money as it tantamount to bribery, which should not be allowed. — RGAAG
