Mascota de Zamboanga 2015, a fashion show and competition of chabacano-inspired wardrobes took center stage Sunday, the eve of Nuestra Senora La Virgen del Pilar.

Mascota, held at Centro Latino in Paseo del Mar, is a mainstay in the Hermosa Festival, the city’s grandest annual celebration that highlights the city’s unique blend of multi-cultural heritage. It coincided with the Balikbayan Night hosted by Mayor Beng Climaco as a welcome treat for Zamboangueno expats who are in the city for the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival.

Designer Geronie Labora bested 13 other designers and brought home the P50,000 cash prize for his fabulous mascot traje de boda creation. Winning second place with P30,000 cash prize was Erich Minosa and finishing third was Raustin Siocon with P30,000 cash prize.

Mayor Climaco in her message, thanked the participating designers and their models, as she lauded them for exemplifying resiliency and strength amid the challenges.

The almost two hour-long fashion show and competition was attended by some members of the City Council, department heads and representatives from the different sectors and other national and local government agencies. Zamboanguenos from other parts of the world including foreigners witnessed the presentation.

The Mascota competition culminated with a party themed “Samba”, a welcome treat for Zamboangueno expats which has already become a tradition for Mayor Climaco during the Zamboanga Hemosa Festival.

Mayor Climaco lauded the expats for their continuous love and affection for Nuestra Senora la Virgen del Pilar and continuous concern for Zamboanga City.  — Sheila Covarrubias
