Suspected Abu Sayyaf gunmen killed a policeman early Saturday morning and wounded another overnight in Sulu.

Brig. Gen. Alan Arrojado, chief of the military’s Joint Task Group Sulu, said in a statement that  Police Officer-3  Espaldon Tingkahan, 40, of the Provincial Public Safety Company (PPSC) was jogging along the Jolo airport runway around 5:40 a.m. when two gunmen surfaced and opened fire on him.

The runway that stretches from the  capital town of Jolo going to Patikul town serves as a jogging area for health-conscious residents, including civilians, policemen and soldiers.

Arrojado said the killers pretended as joggers and came close to Tingkahan to execute the killing.

He said soldiers of the Philippine Army’s 35th Infantry Battalion stationed nearby responded and engaged the gunmen in a shootout which ended with the killers escaping on foot  towards the forest.

Another policeman whose identity was not immediately available was manning a police outpost together with another policeman at the back of the Sulu provincial capitol building in the village of Liang, Patikul when suspected Abu Sayyaf gunmen fired at him Friday night.

The attackers disappeared before the cops could return fire.

Arrojado reminded soldiers and policemen double their alert and adopt security measures to avoid becoming targets of  Abu Sayyaf assassins.
