The Population Commission will formally turn over to Mayor Beng Climaco Monday, Oct. 19, the city’s cash prize for having won the 2014 Rafael M. Salas Population and Development Award (Regional Level- City category).

The turnover of the corresponding P50,000 cash prize will be done during the City Government’s flag raising ceremony in front of City Hall 8am Monday.

Last August, Popcom Regional Director Reynaldo Wong formally presented to Mayor Climaco the award during rites held at a local hotel.

The Rafael M. Salas Population and Development Award is designed to perpetuate the legacy of Rafael M. Salas, first executive director of the United Nations Population Fund, by honoring and giving due recognition to local government units, local chief executives and institutions or individuals for their outstanding contributions in the field of population and development.

The cash prize is to be utilized for any population and development activities, programs/projects in the city.

As the regional winner, the city will represent Zamboanga Peninsula in the national competition that will be held in November this year. —  Sheila Covarrubias
