A very reliable police source has revealed that a local kidnap-for-ransom group was behind the foiled abduction of Dr. Armando Itturalde in Barangay Talon-Talon Thursday night last week.

The source said that the arrested suspect Kauser Atari y Maing,29, a resident of Paniran, Sta. Catalina and a native of Sibuco, Zamboanga del Norte is one of the hard core members of the “Commander Panjang” kidnap- for-ransom group tagged as responsible for some of the kidnappings in Western Mindanao.

The strategy of the group is to snatch targets and turn them over to the Abu Sayyaf Group either in Basilan or Sulu with both groups dividing on the ransom paid.

The source said that the Commander Panjang KFRG which is led by Mamarin Pilay and is being supported by notorious Moro rebel lost command members under Arasid Soya, Asbirin Kalahuddin and Johar Salam of the Salam KFRG.

He said that this group has operated in the region for about four to five years already and have established a network here in Zamboanga City and in the nearby provinces. They have been conducting several surveillances on prominent personalities in the city who are targets of  kidnapping, the source said.

He added that this kidnap gang stays in the city on rented houses or lodging houses for surveillance purposes and for the planning of snatching their targets.

Prior to the Ituralde kidnapping attempt, the kidnappers already conducted a thorough surveillance in the area as well as the time elements were considered in getting the right timing when to pick-up their target, but it so happened that Dr. Itturalde resisted which causeda commotion.

The timely arrival of police operatives led by Tetuan Deputy Station Commander Police Inspector Abdulgafor Maani prompted the kidnappers to flee and abandoned their plan. -  Bhong Simbajon/RMN News
