Mayor Beng Climaco awarded yesterday 533 PNoy housing units in Barangay Cabaluay to members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) assigned in Zamboanga City.

The PNoy housing units were constructed through the National Housing Authority (NHA).

In her message during the turnover program, Mayor Climaco told the PNP members and their families—whether Christians, Muslims or Lumad—to make Zamboanga City their home.

“This is now your home. Let us protect it. Let us honor the memory of those who died during the Zamboanga siege,” Climaco said even as she urged them to never again allow the siege to happen again. “We should never allow that to happen again.”

She recalled that a police officer, Murphy Abilani, a father of three, was the first PNP member to be killed during the attack on Zamboanga City in September 2013 by the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) rebels.

“To all of you here,” the chief executive said, “the life of Murphy Abilani, a policeman, must never be in vain, and as mayor of Zamboanga City I will not allow that (siege) to happen, never ever again because I have strong faith in God.”

Climaco believes that God has given her the opportunity to be mayor of Zamboanga City not only in times of crisis like the siege but also in times of recovery.

“I have strong faith in God na binigyan ako ng pagkakataon upang maging mayor, hindi lang sa panahon ng siege pero sa panahon din ng pag-babangon sa pagkat ito ay panahon ko bilang mayor, it ang panahon ko upang makisama sa inyo Muslim, Lumad at Kristyano,” Climaco stressed. — Vic Larato
