166-Zambo delegation joins Batang Pinoy-Mindanao leg PDF Print E-mail

Zamboanga City is sending a 166-strong delegation to the Batang Pinoy-Mindanao leg set to be held in Koronadal City, South Cotabato from Oct. 24-29.

City Sports Director Dr. Cecille Atilano leads the delegation which composes of 139 athletes and 27 coaches. The group left Wednesday dawn, October 21.

Atilano said the city is fielding teams for the different sports events such as arnis, athletics, badminton, basketball 3-on-3, boxing, chess, futsal, karatedo, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis and wrestling.

The athletes are supported by the City Government and the barangay councils.

In 2014, Zamboanga City bagged the title in the Batang Pinoy-Mindanao led held in Pagadian City. The city delegation garnered 160 medals of which 56 were gold, 50 silver nad 54 bronze, making the Zamboanga team as the over-all champion.

Batang Pinoy or the Philippine Youth Games is pursuant to Executive Order 44 and serves as the national sports competition program for children aged 15 and below. It is envisioned to address the need for a grassroots sports program centered on values formation inherent in the practice of sports and play.

The Batang Pinoy is organized by the Philippine Sports Commission in partnership with the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Education and the local government units. — Sheila Covarrubias
