With the opening of new malls and supermarkets in the city, the City Agriculturist Office sees great opportunity for local farmers and fisherfolk to market their products on a regular and direct basis eradicating profiteering middle-men.

City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat is mulling the idea of striking a deal with mall/supermarket owners/ managers that would pave the way for local farmers and fisherfolks to supply all vegetable, fruit and fish and marine product requirements.

This idea, Palacat said will encourage local farmers and fisherfolk to pump up their capability in producing quality products and most importantly the concept will rid of middle-men who oftentimes make more profit than the farmers themselves.

“Our office will be providing them the technical support, our technicians will be assisting our farmers from planting to harvest applying the latest technology in packaging so they can come up with quality products,” the city agriculturist declared.

In partnership with the City Investment Promotions Division under the Office of the City Mayor, Palacat is set to meet with mall/supermarket operators/owners and managers this week to present the concept and to determine the requirements on a daily or weekly basis.

The City Agriculturist expressed optimism that the concept will promote entrepreneurship among local farmers and fisherfolk, whose children and relatives will also be engaged in such worthwhile undertakings.

Based on initial information, most if not all malls and supermarkets are getting their vegetable, fruit and fish products from outside Zamboanga such as Cagayan de Oro and General Santos.

Palacat intends to assign each barangay with different products to supply the markets, if and when the concept will materialize. — Sheila Covarrubias
