Clearing operations at the Magay area, the site of the Saturday dawn fire, started Tuesday, November 3, as investigation teams from the Bureau of Fire and Protection-Manila and City Legal Office conclude inspection of the area.

Personnel from the City General Services Office and Engineer’s Office undertake the clearing operations which will include demolition of a market building and a private edifice that were damaged by the fire.

OIC City Administrator Elmeir Apolinario said the clearing activity will take several days. He said the 287 stall holders were offered temporary space at the Sta. Cruz Public Market pending clearing operations.

On orders of Mayor Beng Climaco, the City Legal Office is conducting its investigation to find culpability of the fire, parallel with the investigation being conducted by the BFP-Manila.

The conflagration that hit the ukay-ukay area claimed the lives of 15 people and injured 13 others. Estimated damage to properties is P8 million.

Meanwhile, pending investigations, the public market supervisor head has been temporarily relieved of his duties and responsibilities effective immediately. Mayor Climaco issued the relieve order Monday, Nov. 2 to allow the conduct of a fair investigation.

With the relief, the day-to-day affairs at the public market will be under the supervision of Apolinario.  — Sheila Covarrubias
