As part of its livelihood project support to Zamboanga Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in partnership with the Canadian government, will award 100 boats or bancas to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Mampang.

Along with the human-powered boats, also to be turned over during simple rites at the Mampang 1 Recovery Site at 9am Friday, November 6 will be 3 docking sites for use of the banca recipients.

The project is jointly undertaken with the City Social Welfare and Development (CSWDO) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

The beneficiaries were selected in accordance with the criteria set by the DSWD specifically the vulnerability index. A recipient should not have received similar livelihood support in the past and must be seaweed farmers before.

The beneficiaries underwent trainings prior to the turnover of the boats and the docking sites. The boats were constructed by the recipients themselves. — Sheila Covarrubias
