After the City’s splendid performance in the Batang Pinoy-Mindanao leg last month, Team Zamboanga continues to bring pride and honor through other competitions.

Team Zamboanga that participated in the Philippine National Games (national finals)  held in San Jose, Antique from November 12-14 harvested medals in the weightlifting, muaythai and pencak silat competitions.

The weightlifting team garnered 19 gold medals, 10 silver and 13 bronze medals. A total of 23 athletes competed in the said field with 5 coaches, team manager Kagawad Edgardo Ramos, City Sports Director Dr. Cecil Atilano as head of delegation and Kagawad Bong Atilano as consultant coach and tournament director.

The Muay thai team harvested 1 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals with Coach Arnold Palpalatoc while the Pencak Silat team garnered 6 gold medals, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals with Rommel Bernardo as coach.

Meanwhile, Zamboanga City likewise performed well during the 4th Philippine Asia Body Building Championship “Universe Qualifier” held in Cebu City form Nov. 11-12.

Richard Guerrero of Tumaga finished 1st place in the 23 and below category. Claudio Sardan of Tetuan ranked 2nd place in the Mr. Physic tall category, Joey Acar of Camino Nuevo ranked first place in the novice category and 2nd place in tall category while Roger Atilano of Pasonanca finished 4th place in the senior master category.

In the final Mr. Universe competition, Acar ranked 5th place in the tall category and Sardan finished 6th in the Physique Category.

The Zamboanga team was headed by former Mr. Philippines Kit Mortera and Dr. Cecil Atilano with coach Joel Mapiso.

As this developed, Mayor Beng Climaco congratulated and at the same time acknowledged the efforts of the Zamboanga athletes, as they strive harder to bring honor and pride to the city.

Despite the lack of sports facilities in the city, the athletes continue to make waves in local, national and even international competition, the mayor said.

Mayor Climaco will welcome the athletes back to Zamboanga during the flag raising ceremony in front of City Hall, Monday at 8am.

Zamboanga City ranked 3rd in the recently concluded Batang Pinoy-Mindanao leg competition held in Koronadal, South Cotabato, Oct. 24-30. — Sheila Covarrubias
