The City Government in partnership with humanitarian agencies on Thursday spearheaded a clean-up activity in Lupa-lupa in Rio Hondo and Mariki which are used as transitory sites, as a way of ensuring health and sanitation in the area.

Intended to ensure health and sanitation, the clean-up drive was a coordinative effort of the City Social Welfare and Development Office, City Health Office and City Environment and Natural Resources Office with support from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was also participated by the internally displaced persons and other humanitarian organizations and concerned offices.

Just like in the past, the clean-up drive is meant to show to families housed at the Lupa-lupa and Mariki temporary shelters as well as in the permanent houses on stilts the benefits of cleanliness and sanitation in the surroundings.

It is expected that after the activity, the families themselves will sustain the effort realizing the effects of a clean environment.

Similar activities were held in other transitory sites such as Masepla, Mampang, the biggest temporary shelter at present. — Sheila Covarrubias
