Close to 300 landless peasants received on Friday certificates of land ownership from the Department of Agrarian Reform in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

The distribution of the certificates by ARMM Gov. Mujiv Hataman and his regional DAR secretary, Amihilda Sangcopan, was one of the highlights of the region-wide celebration in Cotabato City on Friday of the 26th Charter Day of the autonomous region.

The ARMM is the country’s only constitutionally-mandated region, covered with a regional charter, the Republic Act 9054.

A popular radio outfit in Cotabato City, station dxMS, had said in a report that a total of 711 hectares of lands were divided among the recipients of the land ownership documents.

Of the 711 hectares of lands in the ARMM whose titles were dispersed to beneficiaries last Friday, 154.5 hectares are in the island province of Basilan while the rest are scattered in Maguindanao.

The awarding rite was held at the parade ground of the ARMM’s 32-hectare regional government compound southwest of Cotabato City.

The ARMM covers Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur, which are both in mainland Mindanao, and the island provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.

Sangcopan said there are still 967 land ownership documents currently being processed in their office.

At least 480 of the 967 documents are now in the office of Hataman, awaiting approval.

“We are aiming to distribute 20,000 hectares of lands this year. We are assured of having approved survey plans before the end of the year as one of the requisites for the process,” Sangcopan said.
