The Commission on Elections said it is worried over the “abnormally low” turnout of SK registration with only 3,800 youth who registered all throughout Zamboanga City as part of the Sangguniang Kabataan.

District 1 Election Officer Atty. Alkadam Sakandal said the youth are not so participative in the recently held Barangay SK elections. He said only a handful of youth filed their candidacy and very few participated in the voting.

Asked what could have been the reason for the youth’s “inactiveness” in the SK registration and election, Sakandal said “major reason could have been that when they heard of the controversy of doing away with SK elections,  it made them loseinterest to register for SK membership.”

Sakandal also said “there is no cooperation from barangay officials” to advocate for the youth in their respective community, to encourage them to participate in the SK registration.

“Mas bueno pa man abolish ya lang. no hase entra na barangay officials” (it would be better to abolish (SK elections) and not be included in the barangay officials,"Sakandal recommended.

He said majority of the youth here are not that empowered to lead and run for SK positions as “most of the youth who run for election were forced by their parents or any other persons. It’s not the youth themselves who are willing to occupy such position," Sakandal said.
