The 2015 Mindanao Cluster Science and Technology Fair, now on its second day at the Marcian Garden Hotel, brings hope and inspiration to the people of Zamboanga as the city slowly but surely recovers from the infamous siege two years ago.

Regional Director Brenda Nazareth-Manzano of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-9) emphasized in her welcome remarks during the S&T Fair opening program yesterday that choosing Zamboanga as venue of the three-day even “means that our city has somehow regained the people’s confidence as a safe place to be in Mindanao (next to Davao).”

She said activities such as the S&T Fair are exactly what the Zamboangueños need for they bring hope and inspiration, amid the destructions caused by the Zamboanga siege in 2013 and the series of calamities that follow.

“Science and Technology makes life on earth easier and more convenient,” she underscored.

For her part, Mayor Beng Climaco stressed the importance of S&T in pushing fast and forward the economic progress and development of Zamboanga.

Climaco said the S&T Fair that Zamboanga is hosting until tomorrow provides the platform to promote and foster appreciation of science and technology not only among the youth in schools but in the communities as well.

“Not only Science and Technology make life easier, but it also ultimately teaches our children the value of our constant pursuit of learning and innovation,” the chief executive said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Anthony Sales, cluster chair of the Mindanao DOST and regional director of DOST-11, pointed out that the S&T Fair in Zamboanga hopes to elicit further awareness, interest and hopefully stronger engagement among the stakeholders in the pursuit of S&T development.

He said the event showcases the products of Filipinos’ innovative minds in Mindanao.

“With this event, we are positive that it will help bring about a sustainable peace in Mindanao,” Dr. Sales said, adding that technology is the common thread that has woven and will weave the diverse cultures and sectors in Mindanao, leading to progress and peace.

“What is needed is to capture the opportunities presented by these technologies and turn them into productive instruments of development,” he explained.

The three-day S&T Fair is anchored on the theme “Philippines: A Science Nation Innovating for Global Competitiveness.”

DOST Undersecretary Rowena Cristina L. Guevara said the theme underscores the vital contribution of Science and Technology and innovation in boosting the competitiveness of the local economies towards the global arena.

Also present at the opening program were DOST Asst. Secretary Urdujah Tejada and regional director from Region 10.

The exhibits include rubber testing laboratory for Region 9, food innovation center for Region 10, better mine for Region 11, halal laboratory for Region 12, complementary food production for the CARAGA Region, and HELPS for ARMM. — Vic Larato
