Congressman Celso Lobregat urged the Consejo de Investigacion y Desarollo del Lenguaje Chabacano, Inc. (CIDLC) to fast track the production of the second Chabacano Workbook, the first of which entitled El Primer Alfabeto Chabacano was published by the City Government during his third term as City Mayor.

Lobregat, who was guest speaker during the CIDLC, Inc. Induction and Fellowship Night last weekend, issued the call particularly to Dr. Roberto Torres, CIDLC founding president and author of the first Workbook, and Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) President, Dr. Milabel Ho.

CIDLC is a non-government organization (NGO) attached to and is supporting WMSU’s Centro de Estudio Chabacano headed by Director Melanie Lear.

Lobregat said that it was on his third term as City Mayor and working together with Dr. Torres and WMSU that the second Chabacano Workbook was envisioned to be written and published.

Lobregat lamented, however, that while hundreds of hours were spent by Torres’ group in the production effort, the second Chabacano Workbook entitled Aprende Sillabicacion y Formulacion de Maga Palabra Chabacano is not yet a work of art.

In his speech, Lobregat asked Dr. Torres, now WMSU vice-president, and WMSU President, Dr. Ho, if they are up to the task of completing and finalizing the Master Copy –ready for the publication of the second Chabacano Workbook.

In order to put words into action, Lobregat not only pledged but handed over to the CIDLC President Dr. Torres and Dr. Ho to the surprise of the recipients and the audience a personal check intended for use in completing and finalizing the Master Copy of the second Workbook.

Lobregat also recalled that on Nov. 19-20, 2010, during the National Chabacano Conference hosted by the City Government, he proudly presented some books which helped promote the Chabacano culture including the Chabacano language.

Lobregat said he cited during the 2010 conference the following books and commended their respective authors, namely, Chabacano Handbook by Bernardino “Ñor Noning” Camins, The Roots of Asian’s Latin City by Dr. Hermenegildo Malcampo, English-Chabacano Dictionary by Fr. John Chambers, Chabacano-Spanish Dictionary by Dr.Rolando Santos,  and the Dictionario Chabacano-Filipino-English, the publication of which was commissioned by the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino (KWF). — Jubels Santos
