The National Commission for Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) has declared Wednesday, December 23, a Muslim legal holiday in celebration of Mauluddin Nabi marking the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) based on Presidential Decree 1083.

The declaration covers the provinces of Basilan, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sulu, Tawi-tawi, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur and the cities of Cotabato, Iligan, Marawi, Pagadian and Zamboanga.

Meanwhile, Presidential Proclamation 831, series of 2014 declares December 24 and January 2, 2016 as special non-working days throughout the country “in order to foster closer family ties and enable our countrymen to observe New Year and Christmas more meaningfully.”

In addition, December 30, 2015 is a regular national holiday marking the death anniversary of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal and December 31, 2015, the last day of the year is also declared a special non-working day. —Sheila Covarrubias
