Mayor Beng Climaco Friday sought to ally public fears amid separate grenade explosion incidents in Talon-talon Thursday night and in Patalon Friday morning stressing that the incidents were not related to terrorism but all motivated by personal grudge.

Nonetheless the mayor urged the police and military and barangay officials to maintain the level of alert to prevent lawless elements to carry out their evil plans. She likewise called on civilians to continue vigilance and to support and cooperate with authorities and help curb lawlessness.

The explosion at the shorelines of Patalon Friday morning killed two persons including the suspect and boat operator and wounded 4 others. Initial investigation revealed that the suspect held his wife hostage in Sibuco, Zamboanga del Norte whom he later brought to the city. Upon arrival at the shorelines of Patalon, the suspect exploded the grenade that instantly killed him and the pump boat operator and wounded his wife and 3 others.

The incident in Talon-talon meanwhile, happened shortly after 11pm Thursday in front of the YL Fishing Company building in Logoy Diutay. The incident wounded the company security guard. According to the police, the company owner denied receiving threats or extortion letters but confirmed that the incident was due to internal squabble between and among some workers.

Mayor Climaco has nevertheless ordered extensive probe of the incidents. — Sheila Covarrubias
