Mayor Beng Climaco on Monday spearheaded the recognition ceremony for pool star Chezka Centeno for her exemplary performance in the World Juniors Championship held in China last November.

Distinguished as the youngest Filipino World Champion in the World Billiard Association, Chezka was recognized together with weightlifters Hidilyn Diaz and Nestor Colonia who won bronze medals in the International Weightlifting Federation-World Weightlifting Championships held in Houston, Texas also last November.

Mayor Climaco hailed Chezka for her wonderful feats at a very tender age of 16 in the world stage. Similar words of praise were given to Hidilyn and Nestor who have been reaping medals and bringing honor and fame not only to Zamboanga but the Philippines.

She hoped that the feats of the 3 athletes will serve as inspiration to all Zamboanguenos to do their best in everything they do despite challenges and adversities.

Chezka, Hidilyn and Nestor truly exemplify resiliency and tenacity—traits that Zamboanguenos are known for, the mayor added.

Prof. Elbert Atilano and Alfonsito Aldenete, team manager and head coach of the Philippine Weightlifting Team, respectively, were recognized as well during the special ceremony held after the 8am flag raising ceremony of City Government employees Monday.

The athletes were all accompanied by their parents during the presentation of certificates of recognition.

Based on an ordinance, the 3 athletes including all other medal haulers are entitled to cash incentives, the amount of which is depending on the kind of medal and the level of competition they participated.

The presentation of the athletes was facilitated by the City Sports Division headed by Dr. Cecil Atilano. — Sheila Covarrubias
