Mayor Beng Climaco has declared the city government is fully supporting the campaign of the Department of Health against the use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices in welcoming the New Year.

“We want to ensure that the city of Zamboanga will be environment friendly and the people are safe and secured, especially the children during the New Year revelry,” Mayor Climaco said during the media briefing in City Hall yesterday morning.

She said the local police force together with other law enforcement agencies will strictly implement any and all laws regulating the manufacture, sale, distribution and use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices in the city of Zamboanga.

Climaco said the city’s ordinance banning the use, sale, possession, distribution, storage and manufacture of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices in Zamboanga is currently under review and amendment.

In lieu thereof, she said other pertinent laws on firecrackers will be fully implemented.

Ordinance No. 431 approved on Oct. 2, 2014 aims to institutionalize the ban on the use, sale, possession, distribution and storage of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices, to permanently eliminate unnecessary injuries, loss of lives, and damage to properties resulting from the negligent handling of the explosive devices.— Vic Larato
