Zamboanga City will join the entire nation in observing the martyrdom of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal in a simple but meaningful ceremony to be led by Mayor Beng Climaco at the Rizal Shrine fronting City Hall, Wednesday, December 30.

Themed “Rizalism: The Key to Global Peace, Solidarity and Prosperity,” the event marks the day when Rizal was killed by Spanish soldiers in Bagumbayan, now Luneta Park 119 years ago.  The activity is jointly organized by the City Government and the Knights of Rizal and will be participated by multi-sectoral groups in the city.

The event will begin with the flag raising ceremony at 7am to be followed by the floral offering. Mayor Climaco will later give her commemorative message.

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has issued memorandum circular enjoining all local government units to conduct activities to commemorate the martyrdom of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

Jose Rizal was executed Dec. 29, 1896 after the military court found him guilty of rebellion, sedition and conspiracy. The Spanish authorities believed that his writings “fatally and necessarily” incited rebellion that led to a revolution in 1896.  — Sheila Covarrubias
