Mayor Beng Climaco yesterday appealed to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to help facilitate in the production of documentary requirements to establish the birthplace of the so-called stateless children of Filipino parents in Malaysia.

Climaco made the appeal following a report that Malaysian authorities had sent to DFA boxes of documents covering “stateless children” born from undocuamented Filipino mothers working in Sabah and other Malaysian states.

Accordingly, the DFA had in turn forwarded these documents to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), formerly the National Statistics Office (NSO), for proper documentation.

Due to lack of requirements, however, PSA forwarded the same to the City Civil Registrar’s Office for processing of requirements. Just the same, the office could act on those documents as there are other requirements to comply before any child is issued certificate of live birth such as proof the child was born in Zamboanga City.

Climaco told the press briefing in City Hall yesterday that instead of tossing up these documents, the agencies concerned should assist, facilitate and help in the production of requirements for the birth registry of stateless children.

“But, we really have to make sure that these children were born in Zamboanga City,” the chief executive emphasized.— Vic Larato
